MONGRELS (BOOK REDESIGN)

BACKGROUND

Mongrels is a 2016 horror/coming-of-age novel by Stephen Graham Jones about a family of werewolves barely getting by in the South. It is narrated by a young teenaged boy who lives with his aunt and uncle that is anticipating the day he can transform into a werewolf himself. It was nominated for the Shirley Jackson and Bram Stoker Awards, and a Best of 2016 selection of Tor.com and Book Riot.

DESIGN

Like the original cover, I wanted to include a wolf as the center point of the design. However, I wanted to give it more of a horror feel than the original, and decided to show the wolf having human hands and feet would evoke the image of a werewolf. I wanted to create a what-if scenario of driving alone at night on a highway road and seeing a creature that is familiar, yet upon closer inspection, is something not seen by the human eye before. While Mongrels is also a coming-of-age story, I wanted to emphasize the horror aspect of it more in this redesign.

The illustrations were done entirely in Clip Studio Paint, and the pages were designed in InDesign. The title and author name were done by hand in CSP as well. The mockups were created in Photoshop.
