GRAVE MATTERS MAGAZINE
BACKGROUND
Grave Matters is a quarterly magazine that focuses on how different cultures treat death, ranging from celebrations to ceremonies that go beyond simple burials. It is meant to be an educational and diverse magazine that may reframe how a reader–especially those in the US–sees death. While it will delve into topics that are vaguely familiar (i.e. Dia de los Muertos), it will also talk about lesser known topics that are not as “mainstream”. Each magazine will feature a different country with every issue.
DESIGN
I wanted to create a quarterly magazine with a morbid topic but framed in a way that is respectful rather than a spectacle or that cultures are “lesser” because they do not follow US-centric customs. I also wanted to make the magazine exciting to look at while keeping it readable so it can be as accessible as possible. Every cover would feature a person in some manner in order to humanize whichever country and custom is being discussed. Pictures featured within will only further the education of what the magazine is trying to represent. In order to extend the life of the magazine, countries and certain events will be presented separately.
The illustration was done in Clip Studio Paint and Adobe Illustrator, while the rest of the project was done through InDesign. The mockup was done in Photoshop.
