BRUTUS TYPEFACE
BACKGROUND
“Brutus” is a typeface that is created on a 10x10 graph with 2x2 blocks, leaving 4-6 spaces between adjacent blocks. It is inspired by Brutalist architecture, which is notable for its minimalist bare design with angular geometric shapes and monochrome color palette, thus the name and graph arrangement.
DESIGN
“Brutus” was initially created in a typography class at the UC Berkeley Extension where the one limitation was to create it in a graph format. While I created six letters for the class, I expanded upon the full alphabet for this project, keeping to the style I had established before.
The alphabet was created and expanded upon in Adobe Illustrator, and the mockups (including the pattern) were created in Photoshop. The 3D mockup was initially made in Illustrator and refined in Photoshop.
